O’Sullivan to brief Cabinet on proposals to tackle homelessness

The Cabinet will discuss plans to tackle the homelessness crisis this morning.

Housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan will brief Ministers on her proposals which come as official figures say six people lose their home every day.

Speeding up social housing supply and allowing closed State properties to be used as housing units are some of the measures under consideration.

Housing, rising rents and the cap on the rent supplement have been some of the main issues candidates for this Friday’s elections have been facing on the doorsteps in recent weeks.

Last night, the Taoiseach said the numbers becoming homeless on a daily basis is not sustainable or acceptable, while the Housing Minister’s Plan to address end homelessness by 2016 says it is now an “emergency crisis”

Minister O’Sullivan will brief Ministers on the plan this morning, which includes measures like converting abandoned Garda stations, care homes and hospitals into housing units.

Also on the table is the suggestion of asking NAMA to make apartment complexes and abandoned hotels available while the shortage of suitable accomodation continues.
