Opposition calls on Taoiseach to make personal contact with Praveen Halappanavar

The Taoiseach has been called on to make contact personally with Praveen Halappanavar to discuss an inquiry into his wife Savita's death.

Savita died after she suffered a miscarriage at Galway University Hospital on October 28.

Fianna Fáil's health spokesman Billy Kelleher said that without an agreed way forward, there could be open conflict in court over access to medical records.

The chairman of the team investigating the death of Savita Halappanavar has been given the authority by the HSE to go to court to seek the release of medical records to assist his inquiry.

Praveen's solicitor, Gerard O’Donnell has said that Mr Halappanavar would challenge any attempt by the inquiry team to access his wife's medical records.

"What I'm calling on this Government to do is for the Taoiseach to personally intervene and meet Praveen to find out exactly what investigation would satisfy his concerns and those of his family," said Deputy Kelleher.

Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin made a similar appeal on RTE's Morning Ireland today.
