Operation Slow Down: Gardaí will be extra vigilant on speeding tomorrow
'Operation Slow Down' - an intensive national speed enforcement operation - is to get underway for a 24-hour period from tomorrow morning.
Gardaí are launching the initiative along with the Road Safety Authority and other stakeholders.
It is hoped the operation will remind drivers of the dangers of speeding and encourage them to comply with speed limits, therefore reducing the number of speed-related crashes and fatalities.
The operation will get underway at 7am tomorrow morning for 24 hours and will see increased numbers of Gardaí, speed cameras and speed vans on national primary and secondary roads around the country.
"The statistic that's there is that a 1% reduction in speed can lead to 4% reduction in fatalities," explained Chief Superintendent Mark Curran from the Garda National Traffic Bureau.
"If a pedestrian is struck at 60kph, there's an 85% chance of a fatality. There's a marked reduction at 30kph - it's only 5%.
"Every kilometre matters."
