The number of patients lying on trolleys awaiting hospital admission has increaseed 53% over the past three years, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) said today.

The INMO in its regular 'trolley-watch' statistical snapshot released today compared August 2010 to August 2007.

The organisation is warning that the coming winter will be the worst on record unless the HSE opens all closed beds and fills all frontline vacancies.

It is also calling for consultants to change their work practices, and for nurses to play a greater role in patient discharge.
