The blaze broke out at a halting site in the early hours of this morning. Four people including a child and a baby were taken to hospital.

The fire on the Glenamuck road in Carrickmines broke out at around 4am today.

The people who died are believed to have been from the same family.

Four people including a child and a baby were taken to hospital St Vincent's and Tallaght Hospitals for treatment for smoke inhalation.

It is reported that 20 members of the same family were living on the halting site, which had around six modular homes for accomodation.

Local Sinn Féin Cllr Chris Curran said the family had been living in the area for a long time.

“The family are certainly well-known in the area, both in the local schools as well and this will come as a major shock for all people living in this area," he said.

A number of ambulances attended the scene, and six units of the Dublin Fire Brigade are still takling the blaze.

A Garda Technical exam of the scene is due to take place this morning.

Local resident Sharon McCoy, says the news of the fire has shocked people in the area.

“It is just absolutely devastating, it’s actually hard to comprehend, I think everyone is in a state of shock and I can see all the neighbours coming out to catch up and see what the updates are on the news,” Ms McCoy said.

“All I can think of now, in my head passing by, are the children out playing with the dogs and the Jack Russells and I can’t imagine what that experience must have been like...God love them.”

President Michael D Higgins said he was "shocked and saddened" by the deadly fire, adding: "This is a most dreadful tragedy. My thoughts at this time are with the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and those who have been injured.

“I have asked to be kept informed on this shocking event throughout the day.”

Fianna Fáil leader Micheal Martin said: “This is an extremely shocking incident and I want to express my deepest sympathy to the families affected by this tragedy.”

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams said it was “horrific news to wake to on a Saturday morning”, while Alex White, Labour’s Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources and TD for Dublin Rathdown, said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are currently battling with their injuries, and the families and friends of the all those who died.”
