New Omagh inquiry 'would not provide the families with answers'

The Northern Secretary said today that she refused to commission a cross border judicial inquiry into the Omagh Bombing because it would not provide the families with new information.

Theresa Villiers is in Dublin to meet with the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore at Iveagh House this afternoon.

She said that she looked very carefully at holding a new public inquiry into the Omagh Bombing and spoke to the families of those killed and to the survivors.

Ms Villiers said that she did not think a cross-border judicial inquiry would bring any new information into the open.

"The reason why I didn't feel a public inquiry was appropriate was because this atrocity has been very extensively investigated and the police inquiries have also been subject to very extensive investigations and scrutiny," she said.

"Around 10 previous inquires have taken place. I didn't feel that a new process would provide the families with answers that aren't already out there in the public domain."
