New legislation to 'deglamourise' drinking in the pipeline

New legislation could see a minimum price of €8 brought in for a bottle of wine.

It would also mean that cans of beer could not be sold for less than €2.

It is part of an effort by the Minister for Health Leo Varadkar to 'de-glamourise' drinking in Ireland.

Ads for alcohol on sports pitches also look set to be banned under the new legislation.

The legislation would also see warning labels put on bottles and cans and introduce a watershed for the advertising of alcohol on TV and radio.

Leo Varadkar is expected to bring the legislation to the cabinet table in the coming weeks.
