The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has welcomed new proposals to increase the frequency of NCT checks.
Owners of cars more than six years old may have to put their vehicles through the NCT every year if plans from the European Commission announced yesterday get the go-ahead.
It is hoped the move will help reduce road fatalities.
At the moment, cars between four and 10 years must be tested every two years, and vehicles over 10 years must be tested every year.
Director General of the SIMI Alan Nolan said the recession has led to people taking risks with their vehicle safety.
"I know the Road Safety Authority is already concerned that people are neglecting to service their vehicles," he said.
"Obviously when people are challenged financially it's one of the things that moves down the list.
"But it's a concern when people are driving on bald tyres… and not getting brakes and other safety items checked."
