Morrison hotel to undergo major revamp

A landmark Dublin hotel is to undergo a multimillion euro revamp.

A seven million euro cash injection will be pumped into The Morrison on the north side of the Liffey in the city centre.

The major investment will see the hotel buck the trend in the otherwise static tourism and hospitality sector.

Stephen Mulligan, UK and Ireland director of Martinez Hotels and Resorts, which operates the 138-room business, said the facelift could attract more visitors to Dublin.

“Ireland’s hospitality sector has been hard hit by the recession and there’s obviously been a huge period of consolidation in recent years,” Mr Mulligan said.

“However, we feel that Ireland’s tourism industry has a lot to offer local and international guests and is certain to rebound based on the collective efforts already being made to ensure the country remains an attractive and viable place to visit.”

The money will come from Morrison Estate Holdings, which owns the hotel, and is expected to create work for local designers and suppliers.

Hotel general manager Patrick Joyce will oversee the redesign of the 138-room boutique hotel.

He said everything on the premises, from the food and drink, was up for the overhaul, creating new opportunities for local producers.

“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to oversee the project and work with some of the industry’s most talented and creative partners to bring something new and fresh to the Dublin hospitality scene, while staying true to The Morrison’s DNA,” Mr Joyce added.

The Morrison closed its doors this week for work to begin. Its relaunch is expected in early February.
