Met Éireann issues weather warning as snow approaches

Met Éireann has issued a weather warning today, as bitterly cold weather and snow showers continue to grip the country.

Snow and ice are forecast for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford over the next 24 hours.

AA Roadwatch said that the Sally Gap in Wicklow is now impassable due to the harsh weather and Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the area.

"Some sleet and snow showers at times today and tonight," said Met Éireann.

"These mostly light, but with a dusting in places. Some moderate accumulations possible in parts of Leinster and east Ulster, these mainly on high ground.

"Icy patches expected overnight also."

Temperatures are expected to fall to between zero to -4°C.
