A medical evacuation team has been scrambled to remove a crew member from a ship 100 miles west of Fastnet Rock off the south west Cork coast.
The Waterford-based rescue helicopter 117 performed the evacuation, with communications assistance provided by the Shannon-based helicopter 115.
The evacuation from the Sweden-registered cargo vessel the Atlantic Cartier was coordinated by the Valentia Rescue Communications Centre.
The ship is due to arrive in Liverpool tomorrow.
The crew member's injuries are not life-threatening, a spokesman for the Department of Transport said, but the nature of his injury is not yet known. He is being transported now to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
The first call from the vessel alerting Irish authorities to the need for assistance was received late last night. The evacuation team had to wait for the vessel to come in range before it could act.
