Former Green Party MEP Patricia McKenna is apparently set to contest the forthcoming European elections as an independent candidate.
Ms McKenna, who was highly critical of the Green Party's decision to enter government with Fianna Fáil, appears set to seek election in the Dublin constituency.
Sources in the Greens say ex-MEP has given an interview with Hot Press confirming her plans.
However, it is unclear if she has officially resigned from the party.
Green Party Dublin MEP candidate Senator Deirdre de Burca today said she was not surprised that McKenna has signalled her decision to quit the Greens.
“The pity about Patricia McKenna’s move is that she did not do it at least a year ago and spare herself and her party colleagues a lot of time-wasting and strife. It has been increasingly clear that she does not share the same views on many issues with Green Party members,” Senator de Burca said.
Meanwhile, Meath East TD Thomas Byrne is believed to be coming under pressure to run for Fianna Fáil alongside Liam Aylward in the Ireland East constituency.
Mr Aylward is strong in the south of the constituency, while Mr Byrne's core support is in the north.
