Mary Robinson confirms she will gift archive to NUI Galway

Former President Mary Robinson has confirmed she will gift her archive to NUI Galway, and will not avail of any tax credits available to her.

The Victoria House Foundation has been working to develop a centre at Ms Robinson's childhood home in Ballina, where the archives would have been kept.

Concerns were raised that Ms Robinson was to avail of a tax credit worth around €2m as part of the deal . However in a statement this evening, the former president said she would not avail of any tax credits.

The foundation says the storage of the archive in Galway will mean there is no need to have archival facilities in Co Mayo.

It says developing the centre around Ms Robinson's childhood home remains the preferred option but other options will also be explored.
