Fianna Fáil has unveiled the former Labour chairman Colm Keaveney as the party's newest TD and given him a frontbench position.

Fianna Fáil has unveiled the former Labour chairman Colm Keaveney as the party's newest TD and given him a frontbench position.

He has been accepted unanimously at a meeting of the Fianna Fáil Parliamentary Party.

The Galway East TD's frontbench post is around special needs and embraces education, health, employment and mental health.

Deputy Keaveney has praised Fianna Fáil which he says did not engage in reckless politics.

Meanwhile, the Fianna Fáil leader has described Keaveney as a "serious politician".

Micheál Martin said he believes Mr Keaveney will add value to the party.
