A young man has been airlifted to hospital from a mountain in the Burren, Co Clare this evening, writes Patrick Flynn.

The casualty was one of four people who had been climbing near Fanore when one sustained injuries in a fall.

One of the group raised the alarm at around 9pm using a mobile phone.

The Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard was initially requested to respond to the incident.

The Shannon search and rescue helicopter was also tasked to the scene arriving within ten minutes of leaving base.

The casualty has been airlifted to University Hospital Galway for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Killaloe unit of the Coast Guard assisted the crew of a cruise boat that ran aground on Lough Derg earlier.

There were two people on board the 30-foot cruiser when it got into difficulty shortly before 6.00pm near Killaloe.

The crew of the Killaloe Coast Guard boat located the casualty vessel and towed it to deeper water and later to Killaloe.

Volunteers used their remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to check the vessel for any damage.

No damage was found and the occupants were unharmed.
