A man in his 50s has died outside a pub in Cork city after a row involving two feuding families.

A man in his 50s has died outside a pub in Cork city after a row involving two feuding families.

The man, 51, was beaten and stabbed when two groups of men clashed at a pub on Lower Friars Walk, Ballyphehane at around 30 minutes after midnight.

The row started inside the pub and continued to the street outside.

Gardaí said the dead man was beaten with iron bars and clubs and stabbed. It is believed that about 20 people were involved in the row at one stage.

The man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced dead this morning.

The scene has been preserved pending a technical examination.

Two men were arrested for public order offences and were later released without charge pending further investigation.

An 18-year-old man and a woman in her 20s were taken to Mercy University Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardaí at Togher station are appealing for witnesses on 021 4947120, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
