A designer outlet in Co Laois is to close with the loss of six jobs, it was announced today.

Shareholders of the Rathdowney Shopping Outlet said the closure would indirectly affect 50 local jobs.

The retail centre, which opened 10 years ago, was home to around 30 international and Irish retailers at one point.

Its shareholders are blaming delays in upgrading roads, competition from similar outlets in Kildare, Portlaoise and Kilkenny and the downturn in the Irish economy for the decision to close.
