Kelly: Phil Hogan could have done a better job on water
The Environment Minster said his predecessor Phil Hogan "could have done better" on the issue of Irish Water.
In a major climb-down by the coalition, Alan Kelly yesterday unveiled new lower water charges and confirmed that metering won't now happen until 2019 at the earliest.
Minister Kelly said mistakes were made by the now EU Commissioner Phil Hogan under whose watch Irish Water was established.
"I suppose I feel he could have done better," Kelly said. "I think this issue was underestimated from a scale point of view [and] from a timeline point of view.
"But it was unique territory, I have to acknowledge that. It was the first time ever that something like this was done at this scale - but mistakes were made."
He also said that since he was not a Cabinet member at the time, he was not present when the issues were first discussed.
