Kelly: Drop in homeless numbers welcome, but more work needed
The Environment Minister said he is pleased with the drop in the number of homeless people sleeping on Dublin's streets, and is refocusing his attention on the issue.
The latest rough sleeper count by the Peter McVerry Trust on April 14 showed a drop of over a third compared to the last count in November 2014.
Minister Alan Kelly said that while the figures are welcome, it shows there is still a lot more to do in tackling the homeless crisis in Dublin.
"We're looking at other options in other locations around to Dublin to ease the pressure there, and that's something that we're working on a weekly basis," he said.
"The budget has been substantially increased, and we are looking at many other issues to help the real issue [of] homelessness [and] addressing the situation with families.
He also said the issue was a "critical area" he was focusing "a lot more" of his attention on.
