Japanese couple missing in Co Clare

A major search is underway in Co Clare for who tourists possibly missing since the weekend.

While Gardai have confirmed that searches are taking place and inquiries are ongoing, they say the couple are not yet being treated as missing persons at the moment.

A car, believed to have been hired by a Japanese couple in their 60’s, was located at Byrnes Cove in Kilkee earlier today.

The car is believed to have been parked in the same location since Saturday.

Members of the Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard have been carrying out land searches since around 5.15pm today while the Shannon based Irish Coast Guard helicopter has also been sweeping the area.

Volunteers from the Doolin unit of the service have also arrived in the Kilkee to assist in the search.

Three rescue boats were launched shortly before 8.00pm and are now conducting searches of the area.
