Jack is Ireland's favourite boys' name - for the eighth year running

Jack is the top name for baby boys born in 2014 in Ireland - for the eighth year in a row - while Emily retains the top spot for the girls.

According to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office, Jack has been the most popular boy’s name in Ireland since 2007. Emily first topped the list in 2011.

Rounding out the Top Five list for baby boys are, in order, James, Daniel, Conor and Sean while Sophie, Emma, Grace and Ava were the next most popular picks for parents of baby girls.

In 1964, the five most popular boy’s names were John, Patrick, Michael, Paul and James while for girls born that year, they were likely called Mary, Catherine, Margaret, Ann - or Anne.

2014 saw four new entries to the Top 100 boy names with Henry, Hugo, Ollie and Luca all making an appearance while Annie and Isla made their first showing in the Top 100 list for girls last year.

Interestingly, there were some regional deviations from the top five. In Cavan, Adam was the most popular boy's name in 2014 while, in Longford, Michael topped the list. Noah joined Sean and Jack in the top three in Carlow.

For the first time, the CSO also analysed the top ten most popular surnames of babies registered in 2014 - with Murphy topping the list.

Full details of the CSO figures can be found here.
