A 70-year-old Franciscan priest, Fr Manus Campbell, was murdered yesterday in South Africa after disturbing intruders in his home.

Fr Campbell, who was from Belfast, was alone in his parochial house at the time of the attack.

A spokesman for his order said people departing from a parish function became suspicious when they saw a car leaving the priest's house with the lights off.

They found his body when they entered the house.

Fr Campbell had worked in parishes around South Africa for 40 years.
