An Irish man is fighting for his life in an Australian hospital after being assaulted in the capital city of Canberra.

An Irish man is fighting for his life in an Australian hospital after being assaulted in the capital city of Canberra.

The victim, who is understood to be in his 40s, was found unconscious outside a supermarket in an area that is popular for nightlife and entertainment in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He has since undergone surgery for severe head injuries and is now in a critical condition.

Police have been trawling CCTV footage and are understood to be close to identifying a person they wish to interview in connection with the attack.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the man's family.
