A further attempt is to be made by the Irish Ferries vessel - the Oscar Wilde - to dock at Cherbourg this afternoon.
The ferry left Rosslare on Sunday evening at 6pm and arrived in Cherbourg at 7pm last night.
An attempt to dock was unsuccessful because of poor weather conditions. The dockside was also heavily iced.
Three further attempts were made overnight without success.
The vessel has remained off port and another attempt is being made around now to dock.
There are 500 passengers on board the vessel including a number of French school students returning from a trip to Ireland.
Irish Ferries say all are safe, in good spirits, are comfortable and being well catered for.
One crew man who suffered a suspected leg fracture is being attended to on board the ship pending his removal to a hospital once the vessel has docked.
The company says the vessel is not due to make its scheduled return sailing to Rosslare until later today and no Irish bound passengers have yet been affected by the delay.
