Irish-Egyptian family believe one sibling in Egypt prison

The family of four Irish siblings caught up in the violence in Cairo believe at least one of them is now in jail.

Officials at the Irish embassy in Cairo are still trying to trace four members of the Halawa family, who were trapped inside a besieged mosque yesterday.

At least two of the siblings are believed to have been taken into military custody after getting out of the mosque, but it is not yet known what happened to the other two.

The three women and a teenage boy are members of an Irish-Egyptian family, whose father Hussein Hal-awa is the Imam of Ireland's biggest mosque in Dublin.

Speaking in Dublin, their older sister Nusayba Halawa says she has spoken to a girl, who met at least one sister in custody.

Ms Halawa said: "I tried to get any information from her, like if she had heard that they are okay. Are they safe? How are they treating them?

"To be honest the information she had was very little, because she didn't know them personally, so she wouldn't know who is there and are they all okay or not, or if my little brother is there with them or not.

"So we are really worried about that."
