Investment in Institutes of Technology essential for future economy

The TUI says appropriate investment is needed in the Institute of Technology sector to meet the future needs of the Irish economy.

New figures published by the Teachers’ Union of Ireland show student numbers increased by over 17% between 2008 and 2012, despite a reduction in the number of full-time lecturers by around 8%.

This country markets itself internationally as a knowledge-based economy," said the President of the TUI, Gerard Craughwell.

"What we want the Government to do is .. see the funding increased, and we want to see greater investment in third-level institutions, in order that we can meet the demands of a modern knowledge economy."

The union also said funding for the sector has decreased by 22% in recent years.
