Intel workers braced for loss of up to 400 jobs

Workers at Intel are bracing themselves for the worst with expectations that 400 jobs are to be lost at the Kildare plant today.

Management at the European Headquarters in Leixlip are expected to seek voluntary redundancies as part of the company's global restructuring plan.

Some 4,000 permanent staff are employed here in plants in Leixlip, Shannon and Cork.

Leixlip Councillor Bernard Caldwell said that he hopes the company will look after any workers that are let go.

"I suppose people are pretty concerned over what's going to happen some time today," he said.

"But overall there's not that big a concern around Leixlip because a lot of the workers live outside the area and I think Intel's track record on this is quite good, they've looked after previous employees who were made redundant in previous years,

"Until today, we really won't know the full extent and the effects of it, so we'll wait and see."
