Howlin not going to 'take sides' in penalty-points furore

Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has said establishing a Commission of Investigation into the handling of the penalty-points probe is a matter for the Government to consider.

Minister Howlin said he was not going to "take sides" between whistleblower Maurice McCabe and Garda Commissioner martin Callinan, adding that everyone is entitled to a "fair hearing".

Earlier, Mr McCabe denied that the Garda Commissioner wrote to him and directed him to cooperate with the garda investigation into the cancellation of penalty points.
