Homelessness charity to highlight danger of vulture funds to Dáil committee

The Peter McVerry Trust is appealing to the Government to do more to help families who are at risk of becoming homeless.

The charity will be before a Dáil committee later this morning to present ideas for solving the current housing crisis.

They want the State to use empty buildings for accommodation in urban areas, and to provide greater support to prevent young people who are coming out of care from becoming homeless.

The group's CEO Pat Doyle, said that they also plan to highlight the repossession of homes by the banks.

"If you look at the 2,900 homes that Ulster Bank are going to sell off the loans of to vulture funds, 900 of them are family homes," he said.

"So the Government needs to know - 900 homes transferred from Ulster Bank to vulture funds equals 900 families eventually coming towards hotel accommodation.

"It's not appropriate, it's not right. It’s costly."
