Harney 'satisfied' with handling of latest cancer reviews

Minister for Health Mary Harney says she is satisfied that the two hospitals involved in the latest cancer scares have acted appropriately in dealing with the patients affected.

Minister for Health Mary Harney says she is satisfied that the two hospitals involved in the latest cancer scares have acted appropriately in dealing with the patients affected.

Her comments follow confirmation from the HSE that a number of patients at Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Galway are involved in cancer diagnosis reviews.

Reports suggest that as many as 15 patients in one of the hospitals could have mistakenly been given the all-clear for the disease.

It has also emerged that a pathologist at CUH had to resign at the request of the hospital when his practices were called into question.

However, Ms Harney said today that she was satisfied with the way in which the events are being handled.
