Group calls for wealth charge to replace property tax

A group campaigning against the Government's planned new household charge and property tax are today calling on the people of Ireland not to pay these levies.

The Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes said that the Government should introduce a wealth tax instead.

The group's comments come after the Environment Minister Phil Hogan announced yesterday that he is planning to introduce a property tax as early as 2013, which will be based on a homeowner's ability to pay and the size and value of their property.

All homeowners are to be hit with a new €100 household charge due to come into effect next year.
