Green Party calls on Minister Ross to outline plan for public transport

The Green Party is calling on the Transport Minister to outline his vision for the future of public transport.

Drivers at Dublin Bus are holding their sixth day of strike action in an ongoing dispute over pay.

Thirteen more days of strike action are scheduled to take place next week and next month.

Transport Minister Shane Ross has said that he and his department will not intervene or provide additional funding to Dublin Bus.

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said that Minister Ross needs to outline how he sees the public transport sector developing in the future.

"Why does he not come out and say: 'Well, let's sit down and talk about productivity gains, which make the service better for the public'?" he said.

"We stand with bus drivers, and the Luas drivers and the train drivers, but we want to see a lot more of them.

"And I think if we focused on that first and foremost, rather than a simple binary 'yes, pay or no more pay', that's not the way to look at it.

"Let's look at how we create a really good public transport system.

"Pay is one element of that, but in our minds, the first element is defining what is out level of growth, what are the plans for developing it?

"He's said nothing about that."
