Greek MEP shrugs off Taoiseach's suggestion to follow Ireland's lead

A Greek MEP has rubbished Enda Kenny's comments that Greece should follow Ireland's lead, and not ask for a write-down on their debt.

The Taoiseach made the comments in Brussels earlier this week.

MEP Kostas Chrysogonas from the Syriza Party, says that it is unrealistic for Ireland or Greece to pay off their sovereign debts.

The Syriza party, who recently won a general election in Greece, is calling for a debt conference to be held with all EU member states.

Greek MEP Kostas Chrysogonas, said the sovereign debts and government borrowings of the Irish and Greek governments are too high.

"This is simply an utopia – that either Greece or Ireland can pay back their sovereign debts. It is not possible.

"This holds true not only for Greece and Ireland, but for most Eurozone member states."
