Ireland will elect its next President on October 27.
The Cabinet has given the go-ahead for the poll to take place on that Thursday.
The Government has said that three referenda will be held on that day also, in relation to judicial pay, the Abbeylara case (Dáil committees) and a third to be decided.
Environment Minister Phil Hogan has said the Government went with the Thursday over the Friday because it is a bank holiday weekend.
Mr Hogan also said the choice of day will "facilitate staff".
