Government to release more documents on controversial Siteserv sale

The Department of Finance will release more documents today in connection with the sale of Siteserv.

The company was sold by the former Anglo Irish Bank to Denis O'Brien's Millington firm at a loss to the taxpayer of €100m, prompting concern from officials at the Department of Finance and opposition TDs.

Concern was first raised about the sale of construction company Siteserv by IBRC, formerly known as Anglo Irish Bank, by officials at the Dept of Finance in 2012.

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan has said that he met with the chairman of the bank and was assured that the deal was in the best interests of the state.

Opposition TDs have raised the issue once again, however.

Independent TD Catherine Murphy said that more IBRC sales may need to be called into question.

“Department officials were concerned about the quality of some of the decisions made for some very large transactions,” she said.

“We need to know what they were.

“They were particularly critical of the chief executive – we need to know what they were.

“Did the citizens of the State get the optimum from those transactions? That’s critically important.”

Yesterday in the Dáil, the Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the Government would be happy for the Comptroller and Auditor General to investigate the deal.

He added that the Department of Finance will release further documents today which will reveal more details about the transaction and the concerns raised.
