Government response to Guerin report due

The Cabinet will be asked to sign-off on an official response to the Guerin Report this morning.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald wants to speed-up plans for a Commission of Investigation into the Guerin Report, and push ahead with a review of her own Department.

It comes as the Department’s Secretary General Brian Purcell is called to take questions from TDs about the failure to investigate allegations.

Frances Fitzgerald’s first Cabinet meeting as Justice Minister will be dominated by concerns over her new Department, as well as the Gardaí and GSOC.

She will be asking her colleagues to sign off on an official Government response to the Guerin Report, on how allegations of misconduct by Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe were handled.

This is expected to include the plans for a commission of investigation and a review of the Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, the Department’s top civil servant Brian Purcell is still under scrutiny.

He has been asked to appear before the Justice Committee on Thursday, to explain the failure to properly investigate allegations made by Sergeant Maurice McCabe.

His response is expected later today.
