The Department of Justice is insisting that burglaries are declining across the country despite an Eircom Phonewatch study showing that they have increased by 26% since last year.

The company says its analysis shows that break-ins in Dublin were up 12% between June 2005 and June 2006, while those outside the capital were up by a massive 35%.

However, the department says the latest CSO figures show that the number of burglaries being investigated by gardaí were down 11% in the third quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.

It also claimed that the extension of the Garda's Operation Anvil had "notable success" in targeting criminal gangs who commit burglaries.
