Gay Byrne has said that if a large majority of the people of Ireland wanted him to be president he "would have to consider it".

Speaking to RTE radio, he said no one had approached him officially to run, and that an anti-political party sentiment may have motivated people to suggest his name.

He said that he had no real appetite for travelling the "length and breath of Ireland" in a presidential campaign, but that: "If someone can convince me that the mass of Irish people are clamouring for me to be President, I would have to listen to that."

He said that "clamour" did not exists at present, as far as he could see.
