Motorists are being reminded they can receive up to four penalty points on their licence if caught speeding.

The Gardaí's "Operation Slow Down" is now in its third day and has so far detected more than a thousand people exceeding the speed limit in various parts of the country.

This road safety campaign is supported by the RSA and is just one of many attempt to save lives on Irish roads.

The new "no texting and driving" legislation has been in effect since the May Bank Holiday, four weeks ago.

Assistant Commissioner John Twomey says, while they don't have official figures, the new road traffic act has helped to increase detection rates.
