Gardaí have revealed they have arrested more than 450 people behind the wheel who were disqualified from driving.
Officers were given new powers at the end of June, up to that they could not arrest someone who had been put off the road.
The Transport Committee has heard that 2015 could be the best year on record for road deaths - so far this year the number killed on our roads is down 31 on 2014.
Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey has said they have been successful in tackling disqualified drivers: “This new power enables Gardaí around the country to immediately arrest these high risk offenders convey them to the nearest Garda station, charge them with a specific offence of driving while disqualified and bring them to the nearest available court city.
“Up until the end of October 456 disqualified drivers have been intercepted, arrested and charged, under these powers, many vehicles have also been seized and impounded as they were also uninsured.”
