57 people have been caught speeding this morning as part of Operation Slowdown.

Gardaí said they checked the speed of around 18,000 vehicles between 7am and 10.45am this morning.

On one occasion, a vehicle clocked nearly 120 kilometres an hour in an 80 kilometre zone in Louth.

Another in Bundoran in Donegal was travelling at more than a 100 kilometres an hour when they should have been doing less than 60kph.

A third incident in Castlebar recorded a speed of 124hph in a 100kph zone on the N5.

Operation Slowdown continues until 7am tomorrow.
