Garda report shows increase in killings

The annual report from An Garda Siochana has shown that the number of murders and manslaughters is up on the previous year.

The annual report from An Garda Síochana has shown that the number of murders and manslaughters is up on the previous year.

Overall crime detection rates for 2006 were at 63%, up 6.5% compared to 2005.

It also shows number of people being killed on our roads has decreased, with 368 people losing their lives, a 7% reduction on the previous year.

Around 18,000 were arrested for drink or drug driving, with almost 200,000 caught speeding.

More than 1,500 complaints were made against the Gardaí in 2006, but a public attitude survey carried out around the same time shows the force recording an overall satisfaction rate of 80%.
