Garda officers in second ever work-to-rule today

Gardaí are stepping up their pay row with another day of industrial action today.

For only the second time ever, middle-ranking officers will be on a work-to-rule.

For 24 hours from 7am, they will refuse to use their IT system, process prisoners or do admin work.

Talks between Sergeants and Inspectors and the Department of Justice stalled earlier this week and will resume this afternoon.

President of the AGSI, Antoinette Cunningham, said: "We've laid our cards firmly on the table in relation to the industrial relations mechanisms we believe AGSI members should have. We still need to progress those matters.

"We're frustrated with the slow progress of talks, but we are engaging and we will return to the table this afternoon."

Members of the national executive committee of the AGSI, which represents 2,000 mid-ranking officers, will meet this morning.

AGSI leaders will update the executive on the talks and sources said decisions will be made regarding both negotiations and dealings with Garda management.

The AGSI had lodged a 16.5% pay claim in their talks with the Department of Justice and want immediate access to industrial relations mechanisms. Sources said they want a legislative timeframe to implement government commitments on negotiation rights.

Meanwhile, up to 12,500 frontline and mid-ranking gardaí are due to withdraw their labour for 24 hours on four successive Fridays in November (4, 11, 18, and 25).
