An off-duty garda is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot in New Orleans in the US.

The man, who is stationed in Newcastlewest in Limerick, was shot twice during a botched mugging in the city.

It is understood the incident happened in the early hours of this morning.

He was on holiday in the city with his family at the time.

The Irish Mirror reports that he was shot in the lower back and leg.
