An Irishman, once jailed for 22 years for plotting to kill Protestants, has been refused political asylum in the US.

Immigration Judge James Vandello ruled that former IRA member Ciaran Ferry, 30, from West Belfast, is not eligible for asylum because he committed “a serious non-political crime” that involved the persecution of others.

Vandello also found that Ferry lost his chance to apply for asylum because he failed to file for a visa extension before his paperwork lapsed.

Ferry has been in a Colorado prison since January when he and his American wife, Heaven, arrived at a Denver immigration office to meet authorities about his request for a green card.

He moved to the US in 2000 after his name appeared on a Protestant terror group hit list.
