Former Clerys workers to receive 'significant' goodwill payment

A new deal has been reached which will allow the redevelopment of Clery's to go ahead.

Although the specific details of the agreement are confidential, it does include a significant goodwill payment to former Clery's workers and the creation of a community liaison and employment officer for workers who may wish to join the new development.

As a result of the deal, SIPTU has withdrawn its appeal to the grant of planning permission to developers Natrium and construction is expected to get underway in the coming months. The store is likely to reopen in around three years.

“Our settlement provides for fair working conditions into the future in the building,” SIPTU Divisional Organiser Ethel Buckley said when the deal was announced.

“All in all, it is a very good day. It is a good day for the city and good day for the developer.”

The service of ex-Clerys workers will also be considered during the employment phase of the new development.
