A five-year-old boy was injured today after picking up a pipe bomb outside a house in Co Wicklow.

A five-year-old boy was injured today after coming into contact with an explosive device outside a house in Co Wicklow.

The child was taken to Crumlin Children’s Hospital with serious injuries to his hand following the incident at around 8.30am.

It is understood the object, which gardaí described as a viable device, was left outside a property on Sycamore Drive in Newtownmountkennedy.

The area has been sealed off for a technical examination and gardaí have appealed for information.
