Fitzgerald: Smoking car ban 'draconian, but makes sense'

The Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald says plans to ban smoking in cars carrying children may sound draconian but make sense.

Minister Fitzgerald made the comments as new cigarette packets are rolled out in Ireland containing graphic images of the effect smoking has on your health.

Ireland has selected 14 images to display on packs.

Minister Fitzgerald says the government is committed to combating the effects of smoking and this includes a ban in cars with children.

She said:“It sounds draconian when you say it first but when you think about the impact of smoking on young children, the effects in relation to asthma, and lifelong illnesses, it begins to make sense in confined spaces that you shouldn't expose children to smoke.”
