Fianna Fáil propose a sentencing council if returned to power

Fianna Fáil has said it will create a sentencing Council if returned to power.

The party has said the time has come to impose harsh and severe sentences on those involved in the criminal underworld.

There has been widespread condemnation to the killing of 32-year-old David Byrne who was gunned down in a Dublin hotel on Friday.

Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Justice Niall Collins said a Sentencing Council would advise on the appropriate spells in jail for those involved in organised crime: “You would have people from the Gardaí, the probation, the HSE, with people from civil society and you would have members of the judiciary.

“You have to respect the independence of the Judiciary and not encroach upon them, they would sit down as a group of people within the court service with a dedicated small budget, they would draw up the parameters for sentencing.”
