The lakeland town of Enniskillen in the North close to the G8 summit is to receive a makeover worth more than a quarter of a million euro.

Enniskillen is beside the luxury Lough Erne golf resort which is hosting the meeting of world leaders. Hundreds of officials, members of the security services and protesters are expected to pass through the Co Fermanagh town in the region’s far west.

The extra government money will be used for painting, signage and training of retailers, Stormont’s Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said.

“In June, the eyes of the world will be on Enniskillen and this project will strengthen the physical retail core of the town by improving its appearance,” he said.

Additional funding of £233,000 (€276,000) from the Stormont ministerial executive will assist with the revitalisation of the town centre.

Mr McCausland added: “This project will ensure the reinvigoration of Enniskillen town centre. It will enable businesses and property owners within the town centre to make improvements which will create a brighter and more vibrant streetscape to attract shoppers and visitors.

“In these difficult trading times it is essential that town centres appear as attractive and welcoming as possible.”

US president Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin are among those attending the G8 summit. Surrounding waterways and roads will be locked down for the meeting, organised by British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Dealing with Syria is expected to be high on the agenda while Mr Cameron has said his G8 priorities will focus on advancing trade while ensuring tax compliance and promoting greater transparency to create lasting global prosperity.
